Hello, I'm Louie Roots!

I've been in games and interactive design for over ten years
with a career that has taken me to dozens of cities across the world.
I'm always down for talks and workshops, consulting and general chats,
feel free to reach out any time!

[Game Design]
Since my first industry role at Kiloo Aps in 2012, I've used my design skills to create playful works and curate countless exhibitions. I experiment with small games in different places, watching user interactions and reactions. This player-focused design research informs my choices for digital games, physical hardware and full immersive exhibition design.

[Hardware Development]
As our first game at SK Games came together, I didn't want to show it on a desktop computer. Instead I used my skills in electronics and construction to build a custom arcade cabinet, tweaking the software to suit the table-top style cabinet I built. Since then I've created hardware from everything I can get my hands on; kids toys, animal pelts, industrial junk, half a car, an ATM, jelly. You name it, I can probably make it play doom.

[Event and Venue Management]
I have lost count of the events I've organised over the years, especially taking into account the venue I created in Collingwood between 2016 and 2020, where I rotated the displayed works every two weeks and held multiple events per exhibition. I've also organised events in dozens of cities around the world, consisting of digital and physical games and immersive experiences. Besides all the production and logistics, the most important thing about managing events and venues is just communication with people, being a good host, and putting yourself in the shoes of the attendees.

[Business Development]
Running my own business for ten years has taught me quite a bit. From hiring the right people, paying wages, cleaning the toilets, and planning the predicted income in the next budget, it takes a wide range of soft and hard skills. My experience with scope, milestones and project management has been invaluable for my own business as well as others I've had the pleasure of working with. Running your own show also requires looking outside your industry, building connections with other businesses and communities, and keeping up with what's going on.

[Misc.]
I drove branding on all of my business ventures, creating logos and assets, posters and social media posts.
I designed and built a bar from scratch, from the industrial-style cable tray system to the custom double-cooled beer taps.
I've assisted on the design of hundreds of projects, often improving their suitability for display and events.
Created a bunch of collaborative beers with great breweries and I make a mean pizza.
