crossy road jump controller
Client: Hipster Whale
To celebrate one of Australia's most iconic video game franchises, Hipster Whale commissioned me to extend the play experience of Crossy Road and Crossy Road Castle as unforgettable physical experiences for live audiences. The installations were designed to transform games traditionally played on mobile devices into highly social, spectator-friendly attractions for conventions, festivals and public activations.
I designed and built a custom Jump Controller for Crossy Road that requires players to physically jump to control the game, turning the simple one-touch mobile mechanic into a hilarious full-body challenge. I also created a bespoke arcade cabinet for Crossy Road Castle, allowing audiences to experience the cooperative platformer in a striking physical format. Together, the installations have featured at major events including PAX Australia and Big Games Night Out during Melbourne International Games Week at Fed Square, where they became crowd favourites.
The oversized physical controls naturally draw spectators, making the experience just as entertaining to watch as it is to play. Their humour and visual impact have generated strong creator and media coverage, encouraged live streaming and social sharing, and provided Hipster Whale with a distinctive activation that celebrates the playful spirit of the Crossy Road brand. By transforming digital gameplay into a memorable real-world spectacle, the installations helped attract new audiences while giving existing fans an entirely new way to experience the games.
