Bush Bash
Client: Victoria & Albert Museum (London)
The Victoria & Albert Museum's landmark exhibition Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt explored how contemporary video games have reshaped design, culture and creative practice. Running from September 2018 to February 2019, the exhibition featured groundbreaking interactive works and showcased the creative processes behind some of the world's most influential games.
Bush Bash was shipped to London from Perth as a centerpiece of the Disrupt section of the exhibition. Created by my studio, SK Games, Bush Bash is an interactive work, featuring a projected surface and a modified car body, encouraging visitors to drive into the Australian outback in search of more fuel while the passenger uses the light-gun to defend from pixelated foes. The use of a real car, cut in half, and modified with chunky buttons and LEDs, gave a tangibility to the work that encouraged curiosity and exploration.
The exhibition was internationally recognised as one of the first major museum exhibitions dedicated to contemporary video game culture. It received widespread media coverage from publications including The Upcoming, WIRED and numerous international outlets, earning praise for presenting games as significant cultural and artistic works within one of the world's leading museums.
